COVID 19 Response

Good afternoon everyone.

The current situation has meant that our previous way of life has been temporarily put on hold. However, it has also meant that traffic levels have decreased sharply and the local environment has also seen improvements in terms of air quality.

Within South Tyneside this has also meant that some walking and cycle routes have also seen substantial increases in use over this time too.

The Government has put in place emergency measures during this period including the temporary relaxation of traffic orders to trial additional streets. This means that conventional traffic roads can be converted from primarily 'general' traffic favouring cars and vans to being areas where walking and cycling an be done more safely. Many local authorities, such as Brighton are trying this across the country and we will consider it too.

Work is still continuing on the LCWIP which many of you have contributed to. Some of the feedback which is suggested as part of this question may form part of that project in due course.

Should you have any questions about this short term project please feel free to contact the team at strategictransport@southtyneside.gov.uk .
